Pizza History

No one knows for sure when or how National Pizza Day was created. All we know is how pizza originated in Rome, from placenta bread covered in various layers of herbs, sauce and cheese.

Nonetheless, even though these placenta bread were technically pizzas, it wasn’t until the 18th century that the modern pizzas were invented. The people of Naples, Italy created flat bread dishes covered in garlic, basil, cheese and not too soon after tomatoes.

Pizza started to slowly make its way to the United State in the 19th century when Italian immigrants began to bring them here. Nevertheless, it wasn’t until the soldiers returning home from World War II with a developed taste for it from Italy, that the popularity of pizzas in the U.S. market began to explode, making it one of the most popular foods in America to date.
