Story Behind St. Valentine

During the 1400s AD, there was a priest named St. Valentine's. At the time Claudius II, the emperor, banned marriages  because he thought marriage made bad soldiers. St. Valentine's thought the decree to be unjust and unfair so he took the initiative to marry many soldiers in secret. He was eventually caught, jailed, and sentenced to death. While in jail, he fail in love with the jailer's daughter and was executed February 14th. His last love letter to her was signed "from your Valentine". 

How did Valentine's Day Begin?

The first Valentine's day happened in the year 496, it is said to have originated from a Roman festival called Lupercalia mid-February, which was the official start of their springtime. As part of the celebration boys and girls would draw names from a box and become boyfriend and girlfriend during the festival and some got married. 

Later, the church wanted to turn this into a Christian celebration and decided to use it to remember St. Valentine's as well.

Eventually, St. Valentine's name started to be a term people used to express feelings to those they loved.
